Funebrarum / Interment - Conjuration of the Sepulchral SPLIT LP (2007)

[split album]
"Fuck, the Swedish guitar sound a la Entombed/Carnage always makes me cum like Peter North on acid. Interment is a band that really sound like it was taken straight from 1990. It is great to hear that they did not lose the touch despite the passage of time, a lot (almost all) of the bands that were formed the same year as Interment completely lost “it” by the mid nineties. Maybe they just fell into hybernation and they still think we’re in the year 1990 ah ah! Guess what a surprise when they receive letters without flyers and find out that Entombed plays commercial shit and Matti Karki has turned fat again. The sound, the rhytm, the general writing and even the lyrics are all taken straight from the golden age of Death Metal, and I do not mean Interment sounds like a relatively recent band with a vintage sound (take Deathevokation of Pentacle) – it is a band really sound exactly like a band from that period. I even found some traces of early Napalm Death sonorities, Autopsy and other trhash/grind acts from the 80′s in the mix, and these are influences that modern band trying to play vintage just don’t have, period. The vocals are not terribly deep (also in typical Swedish way), and for once you will be able to discern the phrasing without reading the booklet. But the killer part in this release is the guitarwork which is HUGE, with all those vaguely harmonic riffs a la late Nihilist or Dismember, grossly fat sound and all the headbanging rage of lost centuries (now tell me “Breeding Spawn” is not a Carnage song). Madame et Monsieurs, another release not to be missed. Killer Death Metal lyrics as well, totally flawless." http://www.nuclearabominations.com

Necrophobic - Darkside LP (1997)

"Necrophobic is a Swedish Death Metal band formed in 1989 by drummer Joakim Sterner and guitarist David Parland. It is believed that the band named themselves after a Slayer song from Reign in Blood. During the underground years 1990-1992, the band built up a great reputation with the demo tapes Slow Asphyxiation (1990), Unholy Prophecies (1991) and the limited vinyl-ep The Call (1992). In 1993 Necrophobic signs with Black Mark Productions and in March members David Parland (guitar), Tobias Sidegård (bass), Anders Strokirk (vocals) and Joakim Sterner (drums) entered the studio and recorded the debut album The Nocturnal Silence consisting of nine songs of pure blasphemous Death Metal. Their 2nd full length album Darkside took the world by storm in 1997. This is their debut album “The Nocturnal Silence”, it features 3 rerecorded songs from their demo “Unholy Prophecies”, 2 songs from their debut EP and some new tracks. Classic as well as cult, often melodic, evil and blaspemous mix of Black/Death Metal creating it’s own unique atmosphere while keeping that typical swedish sound." http://freezingmoonwebzine.wordpress.com

INCUBUS - Serpent Temptation LP (1987)

"Before the terrible radio rock band, the name "Incubus" was a name to be totally feared. That's because the death/thrash band Incubus was maybe the fastest thrash band in existence when this came out. The production on this album is muddy as hell, but it sort of fits in with the atonal and emotionless mood of this album. The vocals are a midrange rasp low in the mix, the guitars are fuzzy and the drums are really the only thing mixed pretty well, which is good because FUCK they're impressive. It's a shame the production is amateur because the riffs are memorable as hell and the dynamics really suffer from the lack of coherence. With a Reign In Blood production I firmly believe this album could have blown this band into the spotlight to make them one of the most impressive of the 80's. Check this beast out. It was written the same year as Pleasure To Kill, Reign In Blood and Master Of Puppets and it's nastier than all of them. Sadly this band is no longer around, largely because of the bullshit they had to go through changing their name when the popular Incubus decided to copyright the name and threaten to sue until they changed it to Opprobium, which they did practically nothing under." http://carcassvoice.blogspot.com

Nirvana 2002 – Recordings 89-91 (2009)

[compilation]

Track 1: Taken from the Projections Of A Stained Mind compilation, 1990
Tracks 2-4: Disembodied Spirits demo, 1990 (2009 mix)
Tracks 5-6: Promo '91
Tracks 7-8: Excursions in the 2002nd Dimension demo, 1989
Tracks 9-10: Rehearsal, 1990
Track 11: Rehearsal, 1991
Track 12: Live at Kafè 44, Jan., 2007
Tracks 13-15: Disembodied Spirits demo, 1990 (original mix)

"Nirvana 2002 played pure, old school, Sunlight Studio-era Swedish death metal with huge riffs, bursts of speed, and guttural vocals courtesy of Orvar Safstrom, who also briefly appeared with Entombed. Tons of slow to mid-paced groove permeate the songs, as well, resulting in songs that are at once both catchy and crushingly heavy. As would be expected, the quality of the recordings varies. Certainly, the first six tracks are all clear and deep, coming from nearly modern production values. Also, a nice comparison can be made between the two versions of the Disembodied Spirits demo on either side of the compilation, with clearer drums readily noticeable in the 2009 update. Tracks 7 and 8 from the Excursions in the 2002nd Dimension demo are probably the roughest, but are still easily listenable, and the live and rehearsal tracks contain a mistake or two. The quality of the music is top notch for the era, and easily stands toe to toe with the early output from the successful bands such as Grave, Dismember, and so on. As a part of the scene at a pivotal time, Nirvana 2002 are an important piece of the early Swedish death metal puzzle. Kudos to Relapse Records for making these recordings widely available, and it comes as no surprise that Nirvana 2002 have recently reformed and will appear at this year's Maryland Death Fest." http://metalrunsinmyveins.blogspot.com

Gorement - The Ending Quest LP (1994)

"This Gorement release is quite possibly the highlight of the Swedish DM scene. The guitars are way down-tuned almost as much as a doom record and with this and unparalleled skill of the highest quality with regard to song writing so as to create a record which truly an experience. The band members described themselves as "just another bunch of dm fans who wanted to create music". Firstly, they are not "just" fans. They are in fact people who love the genre to that level that they decided to give back to the genre what it gave them.. utmost, complete and pure transcendence of the highest level. Secondly, they did not create only music. They also pushed the envelope in one the most brilliant scenes of the death metal genre with their skill of looking into a genre with such an amount of impeccable scrutiny that they understood the new mountains that could be scaled within a genre that is not that prone to change. What is really stunning is that they unlike many bands in the dm forest have a sense of calm serenity throughout one of the most extreme genres of metal. Underlying the death metal spread that the band has so brilliantly and lavishly offered us is of all things, melody and at times an element of pain and sorrow. If this wasn't enough proof of their talent, the band seems so sure and confident of what they have created even though its a rather new area in the field of death metal. They always have a tight grip on the reigns of the beast that they have unleashed upon us and achieving this when trying out a rather new concept in a genre speaks volumes about the band. It's a shame that the band released one record. They may re-unite and there is every chance that they may smack us with another killer album, but if not what they have done is let us go with an undying classic amongst cult circles and more importantly a legacy and masterpiece that even after decades has yet to even been touched."
